National Healthcare Decisions Day

Brought to you by Regional Medical Center
We plan many aspects of our lives but don’t always think about what we want at the end of our life. What is important to you? If you had a major medical event, were injured or unable to speak for yourself, who would you want to speak for you?
Advance care planning is more than just a document that you complete. It’s a process of planning and having the conversation with the right people. 90% of people say that talking with their loved ones about end-of-life is important BUT only 27% have actually done it. These discussions will help your loved ones know your wishes at a time that can be very stressful. Having a plan in place will make it easier for your loved ones to focus on the things that matter.
Start by thinking of the things that are most important to you. Help those significant people in your life understand how you would like to live at the end of your life. By communicating your healthcare wishes and preferences, it allows your family and healthcare team to make the best decision for you.
“These conversations can be hard, but divulging them is very important. Every single person will have a different health plan, therefore it’s so important to share those wishes with the ones closest to you,” shares Rose Mary Hunt, RMC Medical Services Director.
Now is always the right time to complete your advance care directive. You can find this simple form in various places including your personal attorney, the hospital or clinic or on the RMC’s website. Research your options. Take the time now and have a conversation.
